Saddlebags & Secateurs
• For those who love the outdoors for more than cycling, there is a
regular trail maintenance programme to help with the upkeep of the
Clay Trails around St Austell. We trim and cut back vegetation and
make minor repairs to trail surfaces and boundaries that we all use!

Free Introductory Ride (back to top)

On joining the programme, you will be entitled to free hire of
equipment for your first Introductory Ride.

Cycling for Beginners (back to top)

These events are specifically designed to help those who have not
cycled for a long time regain their confidence on a bicycle.

What to expect:

  • You will probably feel apprehensive if you have not cycled for a
    while
but remember these events are designed just for you.
  • Before the ride we encourage people to give cycling a try around
the cycle hire centre or meeting point. The Support Riders and
Cycle Hire staff are on hand to adjust bikes, help you to start off,
explain brakes, gears and anything else you are unsure of.
  • Anyone can attend a Pedal Back The Years event, but enrolment
onto the scheme will entitle you to free hire of equipment for your introductory ride.
  • Most rides are every two weeks, usually departing at 12.00 noon,
    each lasting approximately two hours.
  • All beginners routes are flat and easy to cycle. Distances are short
and rides, leisurely, with regular rest stops.

Cycling for the more Confident (back to top)

These events are geared towards PBTY participants who are looking for routes with more miles and harder terrain than the Beginners events. Routes will be developed to meet the demand identified by the participants. Support Riders will organise the route information, event schedule and the hire equipment.

Community based Rides (back to top)

Specially tailored events can be arranged in specific locations for specific groups, wherever a suitable route can be found.

These rides will be arranged in response to requests where and event would be well attended by people keen to join the scheme.

The Backup (back to top)

Two Support Riders will attend each event - one at the front and one at the back. No-one will be ever left behind, or need feel they are holding people up.

All Support Riders are able to carry out minor mechanic al repairs and have skills in emergency repairs and have skills in Emergency Management and basic CPR.

The Equipment (back to top)

  • On joining PBTY, you are entitled to free hire for your first Introductory
    Ride.
  • The Ride Leader will help you get the cycle that suits your size and
    needs.
  • If you have your own bike, taking part is absolutely free: please ensure
it is in safe working order and, if possible, bring along a spare inner
    tube to fit your tyres.
  • If you need to hire a cycle on future rides, these are available from our
cycle hirer partners at £4.00, or free from our own trailer.
  • There are a variety of bikes available including standard bikes,
tandems; adult trikes; and bike tailored for special need
What to Wear (back to top)

Don't worry, no lycra is neccessary! A comfortable pair of trousers and sensible pair of shoes is ideal.

You may get a little dirty if it is or has been wet, so older clothes are best. If it is cold, you will get warmer when cycling so wearlayers and a hat & gloves are always a good idea.

Bring waterproofs and something warm and dry to put on after the ride, especially if the weather is inclement.

Enjoyable, Friendly

Free, Informative

Stroll Back the Years Health Walk Programme : a great way to make new friends, enjoy the area, improve your health, and it's free!

Walking the Way to Health (back to top)

The scheme operates under the national Walking the Way to Health Initiative. Each walk is led by two people trained to look after you. The pace is geared to your own speed, but you will gain most benefit if you try to include some brisk walking. Routes vary between 1.5 and 3 miles, generally taking 45 minutes to 90 minutes including rest breaks.

Who can take Part ? (back to top)

Walks are open to everyone, but particularly those who do little exercise or are recovering from injury or ill-health. If you have any existing medical conditions you should see your doctor in advance for advice. He/she should be aware of the benefits of walking. Well behaved dogs may be allowed—check with the leaders first.

Your First Walk (back to top)

On the first walk you need to arrive in time to complete a brief “Health Check” form. This information is kept confidential but allows the leaders to look out for potential problems.

Route Conditions (back to top)

The leader will tell you about the route conditions at the start, avoiding steep hills, stiles, many steps or very muddy/slippery surfaces on most routes, however be prepared for grass, uneven surfaces or puddles after rain. Some of the country walks are more testing and are listed as such in the walk details.

What to wear (back to top)

Please wear comfortable clothing, sturdy shoes and be prepared for the weather! Layers are useful as you may heat up during the activity. Bringing a drink (recommended) or snack makes the rest stops more enjoyable

Become a Walk Leader (back to top)

Please become a walk leader: regular training days are held through the year. For details of any of the walks listed, or to enquire about starting a new group or becoming a walk leader:
